LANE

I check the time on my computer screen one last time. I’ve spent the last five minutes sitting at my desk with my cursor hovering over the send button on the email I drafted this morning to the city inspector. I scan my message once more, and debate for the one hundredth time if my message sounds too harsh.

Just as I am changing the subject line to something less dramatic, I hear a knock on my office door. I look up and see my boss Nick in the doorway, and I’m thankful for the distraction.

“Hey Nick, come on in. I was just working on an email. Would you mind taking a look and telling me what you think?”

I turn my computer screen to the other side of the desk, and watch as Nick’s mouth moves as he reads it. A few sentences in, his eye brows arch and he stops.

“What is this about? Your other job and the renovation?”

“Yes. Sorry I should have mentioned that. You see Chris…”

Nick holds up his hand to stop me, and I feel my cheeks redden. My boss has been exceptionally kind over the last month when it came to listening about this project. And as interesting as it's been, Nick is also a busy guy. I’m sure he came in here to discuss something to do with banking.

“Sorry Nick, I can finish this later. What did you come in here to discuss?”

Nick pulls out the chair on the opposite side of my desk and takes his time settling in.

“So, do you have any meetings this afternoon?”

I take a quick look at my calendar, even though I already know it’s empty.

“No, I actually kept my afternoon free. I figured I’d make some cold calls, check in with some of my top clients. You know, see if they have any referrals for me.”

Nick looks down at my desk as I speak. I know that over the last month, I really have been slacking at work. It was just that banking seems so boring now compared to real estate. My heart just wasn’t in it anymore. But I owed it to Nick to try harder. I feel a sudden sense of guilt knowing that I put him in the awkward situation of having to come talk to me about my activity. Nick looks so uncomfortable, literally squirming in his seat.

“Lane, your numbers last month dropped a lot. And since you don’t have any meetings coming up, it would be very hard for you to make this month’s goals. And we’re already almost halfway through…”

“You’re right. I need to buckle down and focus. I promise you, I’ll make some calls today, and have my entire calendar for next week full.”

I close out the email screen I was working on, and pull up my cold call list. The thought of dialing random numbers, waiting for someone to answer and most likely yell at me when I told them why I was calling makes me want to groan out loud.

“Lane, are you sure you even like banking?” Nick asks me, leaning in as he speaks.
